There is More than Joy, Prayer and Thanksgiving

(S) Scripture
1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 (NIV)
¹⁴  And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
¹⁵  Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.    

(O) Observation
Most Christians are real familiar with the verses that follow these. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

¹⁶  Be joyful always;
¹⁷  pray continually;
¹⁸  give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.    

These verses (16-18) deal with me and it is interesting that we neglect or skip over verses 14-15 that deal with how we are to treat others. Just how wrong headed is it for us to neglect how we are to act toward others and focus only on God's blessing in our lives. Can we really rejoice, pray and give thanks while at the same time ignoring the needs of the people around us?

(A) Application
These five verses describe how God wants me to live my life. Today I will focus on how I can live out verses 14-15 while I continue to rejoice, pray and give thanks in all things. It is interesting that these verses close with "this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Today I want to be aware of when I can warn, encourage, help, be patient with, and show love to others today. I want to live life the way you intended it to be lived.

(P) Prayer
Lord, make me sensitive to and aware of your leading in my life today. Give me opportunity to live out these verses. Amen

Life Journal 11-28-1012

Who is Your Target Group

(S) Scripture
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
¹⁸  Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
¹⁹  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
²⁰  and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

(O) Observation
This is Jesus' charge to his followers. As we are going we are to be making disciples. It is a continual process that should be as natural to us and as constant as breathing. The command is to go into all the world or "'til the whole world knows"

(A) Application
I have been to many church growth seminars that encourage you to identify a "target" group and then fashion all you do to reach that target. That sounds reasonable until you put it against what Jesus said. My friend, Roger Adams, who has planted two churches in WV, just bristled every time he heard that advice. We don't need to identify a target group, God has already done the targeting. The target is everyone because the message of Christ is for "whoever calls on the name of the Lord" (Romans 10:13).

I am also reminded that this Great Commission must be undergirded by the Great Commandment to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and our neighbor as ourselves. As we seek to make disciples we cannot neglect the Great Criteria of "unto the least of these brothers of mine" that Jesus has called us to serve and reach for His sake.

I suppose for me today it is a reminder that every person I see today is one that needs to be discipled. My target group must be the people God brings across my path and not some artificial criteria that I set up.

(P) Prayer
Lord let me see the people around me today with your eyes and your heart. Break down any artificial criteria I have set up and let me be truly committed to the Great Commission as you gave it. Amen

Life Journal 11-27-2012

God's Presence Surrounds Me

(S) Scripture
Psalm 125:2 (NIV)
²  As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.    

(O) Observation
The Lord protects his people like mountains protect a city. Being from West Virginia and somewhat familiar with mountains, I am aware of the protection they provide. As rugged as they may be to cross they provide great shelter and protection from many troubles.

(A) Application
Today I am aware and thankful for the protection God brings to my life. I am safe because He surrounds me with His presence. Can there be a safer place to be than surrounded by God's presence? I think not! I need not fear what others might say or think about me or how someone might act toward me because I am safe with God. This does not mean that I am exempt from times of trial and trouble. It does mean that His presence and protection are steadfast and sure and in them I am safe and need not fret. Today I will trust in His presence because I am His child.

(P) Prayer
Lord, surround me today as you have promised. Let me sense and experience your presence, protection and power. Amen

What Are You Talking About?

Matthew 12:34b
For the mouth speaks out of that which fill the heart.

(O) Observation
Jesus says that if you want to know what is first on your heart listen to what you talk most about. That is an indictment for most of us.

(A) Application
When I listen to what I talk most about or how I speak too often it is not very consistent with what I say is most important or first in my life. Today, though, is Thanksgiving and I can begin today by making it truly a day of giving thanks to God for every part of my life. Today and every day I want my speech to reflect my commitment to the Lord.

(P) Prayer
Lord help me to get my focus off myself and on to You so that my speech might be pleasing to You and reflect my love for you. Thank you for loving, saving, providing for and protecting me. Amen

Life Journal 11-20-2012

Yes and No

(S) Scripture
Matthew 5:37 (NASB77)
³⁷  "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; and anything beyond these is of evil.    

(O) Observation
Jesus recognized that the people were putting so many qualifiers into their agreements that it would not produce good results. People used these conditions and qualifiers to wiggle and squirm out of doing what they said. They also used to swear by something to show they really meant what they were saying. Jesus says this is unnecessary fro righteous people. Just say "yes" or "no" and then do what you said.

(A) Application
Too often I find myself putting these kinds of qualifiers in my statements and I am reminded that those qualifiers are from the evil one. Today I simply want to say "yes" or "no" and mean what I say and follow through. I want to be known as a man of my word.

(P) Prayer
Lord don't let me off the hook of using qualifiers. Help me to say "yes" and "no" and meant it and carry it through. Let me be a man of my word. Amen

Temptation Comes

¹  Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
²  And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.
³  And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
⁴  But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"
⁵  Then the devil * took Him into the holy city; and he had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,
⁶  and * said to Him, "If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down; for it is written,   'HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE CONCERNING YOU'; and   'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"
⁷  Jesus said to him, "On the other hand, it is written, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'"

¹¹  Then the devil * left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

(O) Observation
Immediately after a spiritual high, his baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit to the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. I don't often think about God leading us to be tempted (I generally don't need His help J). But Jesus was led here and I think it was to show us how to deal with temptation when it comes. The Devil tempts Jesus in these areas: 1) His Authority, 2) His life and 3) His Mission. In each case the Devil used scripture as the basis for the temptation and each time Jesus uses scripture to resist and to show how the Devil had perverted or misused the scripture. Because Jesus knew the Word he was aware when it was being perverted.

(A) Application
I find the greatest temptations to come in the same areas of authority, life and mission. These are key areas in every person's life and if the Devil can get us off track there it puts our whole life out of sync with the Lord. If I am going to resist temptation I must do it the way Jesus did by relying on the Word of God and his power in my life. I cannot trust willpower or human resolve to resist, I simply am no match for the Devil. I must use the Word.
Therefore, I need to spend time in the Word each day, memorize some of it so I can quote it accurately and unperverted in the heat of temptation. I cannot expect to have my Bible with me each time I am tempted.

)Prayer
Lord God, help me to use your Word in my life to avoid giving in to the temptation the evil one brings my way. Help me to know you and your Word so well that I will recognize the Devil's misuse of it. Help me walk the straight path with you each day. Amen

Life Journal 11-16-2012

Unveiled

(S) Scripture
¹⁵ Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.¹⁶ But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. ¹⁷ Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. ¹⁸ And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate^[a] the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

(O) Observation
Paul draws a distinction between those who follow Moses and those who follow the Lord. Those who follow Moses have a veil covering their faces and they cannot see God clearly. They miss the freedom that Christ brings because they are tied to the Law. Those who follow Christ see clearly and are then transformed into the image of Christ. With that transformation comes freedom; freedom to be all that God created you to be.

(A) Application
As a pastor I have been part of many weddings. One of my favorite moments is when the bride's veil is removed and the groom sees her clearly. The smile and joy of the moment just come. IT is that same joy we should feel when the veil is removed and we see Christ as He is. There is a freedom that comes when the veil is removed and we are then able to live life freely following Jesus without the obstacle of the veil blocking our view. Today I want to live free and be transformed into Christ's image. I want the people I interact with to sense the presence of Christ. Today I want to bear a strong family resemblance to Jesus. I want to constantly live with an unveiled face and a clear relationship with God.

(P) Prayer
Good and gracious God thank you for your Son's life, death and resurrection so that by faith in Him I might follow you clearly. Thank you removing the veil in my life and setting me free to be the person you created me to be. Keep me from abusing that freedom and let me walk close to you each day. Amen

How Do You Smell?

2 Corinthians 2:14-16
¹⁴ But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ's triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. ¹⁵ For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. ¹⁶ To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?

(O) Observation
There is a pleasing aroma to the gospel for those who believe. It is the aroma of Christ. To some is smells like death and to the believer it is the aroma of life. It was Paul and his companions that carried this aroma. As believers we should be carrying this same aroma.

(A) Application
November 15^th is the start of deer season here in Michigan. The woods are full of hunters that have gone to great lengths to mask their human scent so the deer will not notice them. I wonder how often we as believers try to hide our scent so that we can blend in with the environment around us. When we are disguising our scent it hides the gospel from those who do not know Jesus. It is my desire never to disguise the aroma of Christ but rather for it to be how I am known. How exciting would it be each day to be recognized as bearing the aroma of Christ.

(P) Prayer
Lord make me keenly aware of when I am tempted to mask you aroma in my life. Let me be recognized as your child by the resemblance I have to your Son. Amen

By the grace of God

(S) Scripture
1 Corinthians 15:10a (NASB77)
¹⁰  But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain...

(O) Observation
Paul understood that it was God's grace that had transformed him into the man he had become. He did not feel worthy but was aware that it was God at work. Paul had a past that was in opposition to what God was doing. From that past he was being transformed. He was not yet all he would be but by God's grace he was not the man he used to be.

(A) Application
There are many life situations that shape us into the people we become. The families we are raised in have a profound influence on our lives. I am so thankful for my family, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that are deeply committed Christians and encouraged me in my faith. The churches I have been part of have taught me much about following Jesus. The West Virginia Baptist Camp is where I first sensed God's call in my life. My college friends and the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ had a great impact on my life. To these I would add death of my father and the witness that would be to so many. Today is the anniversary of the plane wreck that killed the Marshall University football team in 1970, that was a life shaping event.

My life as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, pastor and friend continues to be shaped by God's grace. With Paul I can say that I am what I am by the grace of God. As the saying goes, "I am not all I ought to be, I am not what I'm going to be but thank God I am not what I used to be. Today I will trust God's hand as he forms my by His grace.

(P) Prayer
Father, let me live the life you have made me for. Let me follow you and you alone. Continue to use your grace to transform me. Amen

Our Majestic God

⁶  "On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
⁷  When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

(O) Observation
This is the Lord speaking to Job. The Lord describes His work and creation and his rule over it. It is a clear reminder the Lord is God and Job is not.

(A) Application
As I read this passage I was simply caught up in the majesty of God. He created all that is and controls all that is. His creation and works are beyond our understanding or comprehension. These set Him apart and show us His glory and majesty. I am reminded that Isaiah wrote these words, "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing" (Isaiah 40:25-26 NIV). It is easy to slip into thinking of God in common
terms and to strip Him of His majesty and power.
This passage in Job allowed me to simply pause, remember and reflect on how majestic the God I serve really is. He is like No Other, full of power. He reigns over all, He is the God of heaven who created and controls all that is. What a great way to begin the day.

(P) Prayer
Lord, let me dwell on your majesty. I am grateful that you, the majestic God, chose to love me. Today I want to live in such a way that others may see and be drawn to your majesty. Amen

Foolish Wisdom

(S) Scripture
1 Corinthians 1:17-31 (NIV)
¹⁷  For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
¹⁸  For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
¹⁹  For it is written:   "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."    
²⁰  Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
²¹  For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
²²  Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
²³  but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
²⁴  but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
²⁵  For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.    
²⁶  Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.
²⁷  But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
²⁸  He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are,
²⁹  so that no one may boast before him.
³⁰  It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
³¹  Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

(O) Observation
Wisdom was something important to the people of Corinth. But the wisdom they sought was made foolish by God. They wanted a faith that made sense to them but the power of the cross does not come from human wisdom. In fact, human wisdom empties the cross of its power. Even though it may not make sense to us the power of the cross is rooted in the message of Christ crucified. It is not in miracles or wisdom but in the preaching of Christ crucified.

(A) Application
I have read many "church growth" books and tried some of the programs. It seems that many are based on the best advertizing and marketing skills that can be offered. I was always suspicious of those that told me to identify a target group, I thought Jesus already that in the Great Commission. I wonder if we have not emptied the power of the cross by trying to make that message fit into our slick schemes. When I think of myself and when I was called I fit what Paul described, unwise, non-influential and not of noble birth (don't tell my mom) and yet God has chosen to use me. Why then would I turn to the wisdom of man to accomplish the things of God? This is not a call to be ignorant but it is a reminder of just Who we are to listen to and follow. Today I choose to follow the Lord and the Word God has given to us. Whatever wisdom I need will be found there. Today I must remember that power comes for the cross and not my wisdom.

(P) Prayer
Lord, I do not ever want to empty the cross of its power by substituting human wisdom for the gospel. Help me to get this right. Amen

What To Do the Day After

(S) Scripture
Galatians 5:14 (NIV)
¹⁴  The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

(O) Observation
Paul uses the Great Commandment to remind the people that you show your love by serving one another. Paul has picked up on Jesus' teaching and again emphasizes that the whole law is fulfilled in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." Here it is again and it is so simple and yet so profound. We are to love God and others.

(A) Application
It is the day after the presidential election. A quick glance at facebook showed some pretty nasty remarks concerning the outcome and directed at those who voted for President Obama and most of those comments came from Christians. As I read these verses this morning I was struck with how easy it is to forget Jesus' command. We get so caught up in the political that we miss the direct call of God in our lives. I live in a state that ended up in Obama's column. I did not vote that way but does that give me the right to be mean and nasty to my neighbors who did? No way, I am commanded to love my neighbors regardless of whether they agree with me politically or not. It is not just in politics though, it is also in our lives in church. I wonder why we make things so complicated. We get so caught up in the details of theology that we miss what we are called to accomplish. We argue over the method of baptism and Jesus says, "love each other". We fight over dress codes and Jesus says, "love each other." When will we get it right. The love Jesus is talking about isn't wishy-washy or gushy or dismissing of the truth. Rather it is tough and addresses sin, corrects bad behavior and compels me to love the people I disagree with. I am called to express this love by serving others. I cannot serve others in a Godly way if I have anger, bitterness or a grudge in my heart. Today I will focus on serving others as an expression of my love for God especially those who I disagree with politically.

Lord, keep me focused on serving you by serving others to day. Help me to make this a habit and a daily expression of my faith in you. Amen

Living by Faith

(S) Scripture
You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?
This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
Galatians 3:1-3 (NASB77)

(O) Observation
Paul was addressing a problem in the Galatian church. The believers who had received the Spirit by faith were now trying to live by keeping the law. There were those among them that were teaching that very idea. The idea was to become a Christian by faith and then live that out by keeping the law. These false teachers were encouraging the believers to give up their freedom in Christ for slavery to the law. Paul challenges them and reminds them of the direction they should follow. They began and should continue by faith. Their trust and security is in their faith in the God not in keeping the law. They were justified by faith in Christ and not by keeping any law.

(A) Application
This is still a trap that many Christians fall in to. There are still those who teach that the way to please God is to focus on and keep the law. We too, are foolish if we think that we receive Christ by faith and then try to live out our faith by keeping the law. The problem is that we set up artificial standards and if we keep them we think we must be OK with God. God's grace has set us free to be all that God wants us to be. That freedom is not a license to do whatever we want but rather it is a freedom to do what is right and godly. Before we became Christians our sin nature was a slave to sin and we could only do things that displeased God because they were not from faith. We are now free to do what pleases God. Church Swindoll in his book "The Grace Awakening" calls these artificial standards "Grace Killers" and that is exactly what they do. The "laws" we put in place to show how righteous we are only kill grace in us and others.

Today I want to be a Grace Giver not a Grace Killer. I want to live by faith in the power of the Holy Spirit. I want my faith to be revealed and seen in what I do but it comes from my relationship with the Lord. In no way do I want to think or even imply that what I do in any way merits God's favor or grace. What I do comes out of my submission to Christ not from an obligation to keep the law. Today I desire to live free in Christ and in that freedom to impact people around me with the gospel of Christ.

(P) Prayer
Lord, help me to live free and to trust only in you. Let me live by faith, filled with the Holy Spirit and trusting in you. Make me aware when I am killing grace in others and myself. Let me make a difference for you today in someone's life. Amen

What Kind of Man Should Lead

(With the election tomorrow, as I was reading this morning I was struck by this statement of Job. I thought this is the kind of man I want to lead us.)

Job 29:1-25 (NIV)
¹  Job continued his discourse:  
²  "How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,
³  when his lamp shone upon my head and by his light I walked through darkness!
⁴  Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God's intimate friendship blessed my house,
⁵  when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,
⁶  when my path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oil.    
⁷  "When I went to the gate of the city and took my seat in the public square,
⁸  the young men saw me and stepped aside and the old men rose to their feet;
⁹  the chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;
¹⁰  the voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths.
¹¹  Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me,
¹²  because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist him.
¹³  The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow's heart sing.
¹⁴  I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.
¹⁵  I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.
¹⁶  I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.
¹⁷  I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.    
¹⁸  "I thought, 'I will die in my own house, my days as numerous as the grains of sand.
¹⁹  My roots will reach to the water, and the dew will lie all night on my branches.
²⁰  My glory will remain fresh in me, the bow ever new in my hand.'    
²¹  "Men listened to me expectantly, waiting in silence for my counsel.
²²  After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell gently on their ears.
²³  They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain.
²⁴  When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them.
²⁵  I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I dwelt as a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners.

(O) Observation
It is these values that I want to see in a leader. Sometimes in the text is seems that Job wants the prestige and power he had back. But when I read about how he treated the less fortunate; this is the kind of man I want leading our country.

(A) Application
I not only want this kind of person to lead our country, I want to be this kind of man each day as I serve the Lord here in Charlotte.

(P) Prayer
Lord help me to be a Godly man and leader of this church. Grant that we might elect leaders with these qualities. Amen

Discipline

(S) Scripture

Job 27:2-6 (NASB77) "As God lives, who has taken away my right, And the Almighty, who has embittered my soul,
For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils,
My lips certainly will not speak unjustly, Nor will my tongue mutter deceit.
"Far be it from me that I should declare you right; Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.
"I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go. My heart does not reproach any of my days.

(O) Observation

As Job responds to his friends he reveals his faith and character. He will maintain his integrity and will hold fast to acting righteously. What a testimony. His has lost nearly everything and his friends are accusing his of all kinds of wrong and yet Job holds on to what he knows is right and just and Godly.

(A) Application

God disciplines us because He loves us and wants the best for us. Sometimes he uses our brothers and sisters to correct us. Sometimes he uses us to correct others. The trouble is that our tendency is to protect and defend ourselves in times of discipline, trouble and stress. We blame God for our circumstances. We ask God why he did this or that to us? At best we ask why he allowed something that he could have prevented. We fail to look for the big picture, what God is doing in us to prepare us for other things. Job's wife had encouraged him to "curse God and die." But Job held on to the truth of his faith. I want to do the same. In the face of accusation or even when I think that God has "embittered my soul," I want to hold to the truth of my faith and walk with Jesus.

It is not always easy but it is the only path to take if I want to continue to grow as a Christian. What do you do when a friend needs to be corrected and you risk being misunderstood but you integrity compels you to talk with the person. How do you approach a brother or sister with their sin? How do I receive the correction from others. I want to be as confident in my walk with the Lord as Job was in his. I want this passage to represent my life.

(P) Prayer

Lord, when I am being corrected let me listen and respond with truth and grace. When I must correct another let it be with redemptive words filled with grace. Let me never compromise your word in my life. I want to live for you. Amen

Positions of Power

Mark 10:35-41 (NASB77)
³⁵  And James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, * came up to Him, saying to Him, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."
³⁶  And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"
³⁷  And they said to Him, "Grant that we may sit in Your glory, one on Your right, and one on Your left."
³⁸  But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"
³⁹  And they said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.
⁴⁰  "But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."
⁴¹  And hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.

(O) Observation
I am not sure of their motives but it seems that James and John wanted positions they thought would give them preference and power. Jesus questions them and then rebukes them by saying those places are not for him to give. Since the other disciples became indignant with them it is fairly obvious this was about power and not service.

(A) Application
Next week we will elect a president here in the USA. Have you ever wondered why someone would spend nearly $1,000,000,000 (a billion dollars) to get a job that pays $400,000? Or why would someone contribute large sums of money to a political campaign? I think it is for the same reason James and John wanted to have the seats next to Jesus; positions of power and privilege. Jesus reminds them that the call is to service and not to power and prestige. Sometimes it is easy for me to see my position as one of power and prestige (after all people come every week to hear me preach J). Left unchecked that can become a real ego inflator that can cause me to slide into thinking people should serve me. Power does crazy things to us and it need to be kept in check. Often people give us power we do not deserve and should not have. Today I want to be known for serving and not for self seeking positions of power. If Jesus came to seek and to serve I can do no less or different.

(P) Prayer
Lord, You know how easy it is for me to be attracted by power and prestige for the wrong reasons. Make Yourself so real to me that I become keenly aware of these pitfalls. You have called me to a life of service and that is how I want to live. Grant me the strength and courage to live out that calling. In Jesus Name, Amen
